River Tours: Stan’s Cafe
Join us to enjoy a theatrical tour of the river Lune, in partnership with the award-winning Stan’s Cafe. Our tour guide, Orla Cottingham will share the wonders of the Lune, its stories, wildlife, history and chemistry, with a beautiful textile map made by Lancaster’s Sewing Cafe, and text by Claire Dean. Also available will be live tours of The Thames and audio tours of The Volga. Come along, have a cup of tea with us, listen to some stories, learn some things, meet some people and have a chat.
Stan’s Cafe is building a library of textile river maps which will grow as it tours around the world. The annual theme for Lancaster Arts in 2021 was WATER and we are delighted to collaborate with Stan’s Café on this theme.
Each map is a work of art by commissioned textile artists who interpret the requirements to represent towns, bridges, dams, power stations, tributaries, and other features in their own way. A local writer writes the text. The text is performed by a local actor or ‘tour guide’. The first two rivers in the library are The Thames and The Volga. The third will be our own River Lune. Audio recordings will ensure the tours live on as the rivers continue their journey around the world.
Stan’s Cafe is an arts company based in Birmingham, United Kingdom. It has a long track record of producing contemporary theatre, installations and live art. Established in 1991, it has become “one of Britain’s major contemporary theatre exports” (The Bulletin, Melbourne) with an international reputation for devising and touring powerful and unusual performances and arts projects. It has been regarded by some critics as “one of the UK’s most innovative and exciting theatre companies.” (Independent on Sunday).
This performance will take place on the banks of the River Lune. Full details and times with free tickets available to book here.
