Bach Cello Suites 1::Adrian Brendel cello
Bachís Suites for unaccompanied cello, a summit of the cello repertoire, are one of Western musicís great success stories. Neglected after his death, these Suites are breath-taking in their harmonic inventiveness and lyrical beauty, encompassing serenity and profundity as well as a lively expression of dance. The celloís melodic line conjures an illusion of such polyphonic richness that Mstislav Rostropovich described Suite No.6 as ëa symphony for solo celloí. Theyíre played here in their entirety over two evenings (see 11 March 2010) by Adrian Brendel ñ one of todayís most accomplished and thoughtful young musicians ñ making a welcome return to Lancaster.
