The acclaimed Lancashire Sinfonietta, strongly rooted in regional music-making, returns to Lancaster under the direction of Lyn Fletcher, leader of the HallÈ Orchestra and a popular soloist at HallÈ concerts. Two early works by Haydn, the thoughtful, dark-coloured ëPhilosopherí Symphony and the C major Violin Concerto, precede a showpiece for strings by Stravinsky which mixes high-spirited humour with sedate nostalgia and his typically jazzy, ëoff-the-beatí spikiness. The programme ends with another fabulous work for the Tippett centenary year, the Concerto for Double String Orchestra, with its dancing rhythms, its brooding slow movement combining Northumbrian folk song and the blues, and its joyful finale.
