Psappha presents Schoenberg - Pierrot Lunaire*, Stravinsky - The Soldier's Tale (staged)

An unmissable double-bill of two of the most influential pieces of music of the last century. One is suggested by the characters of the commedia dellíarte and the other was devised as a travelling show in the commedia tradition. Schoenbergís Pierrot Lunaire, a setting of 21 surrealist poems for a soloist communicating halfway between song and speech and a quintet of virtuoso instrumentalists, is an enthralling journey into the subconscious. The soprano Jane Manning has been a leading exponent of this solo part for many years, and is currently researching it further. Film by the video artist Kathy Hinde, specially commissioned by Psappha, adds an extra and intriguing dimension to this performance. Stravinskyís Soldierís Tale, an entertainment ëto be read, played and dancedí, was the starting-point of ëmusic theatreí: it combines a narrator, actors, a dancer and a brilliantly colourful instrumental septet to tell a spell-binding Russian story with a profound moral. The North-West based Psappha is a contemporary music ensemble of international status, with an outstanding reputation for innovative theatrical projects.
