The Schubert Ensemble of London is recognised internationally as one of the leading ensembles combining piano and strings. Its concert repertoire and discography demonstrate its consistently imaginative programming. The groupís close and long-lasting relationships with several composers is reflected here in John Woolrichís sensitive arrangements of five Bach chorales and Martin Butlerís sparkling expansion of two Scarlatti sonatas. It shares its sense of adventure in a fine quintet by Louise Farrenc, one of the most gifted female composers of the 19th century and now the subject of an overdue revival. And finally the Schubert Ensemble takes us down some beguiling Dvor·kian byways in the composerís naturally expressive Second Piano Quartet.
