One of the finest British quartets of today, the Sorrel Quartet is well known for the spontaneity,
fiery commitment and powerful atmosphere it brings to its performances, and for its ëdeeply expressive readingsí. (Gramophone) Now Quartet-in-Residence at Cardiff University, the quartet has made twelve highly-praised recordings. Tonight it combines seasoned craftsmanship with
youthful exuberance in one of the last two quartets Haydn completed, and one which Mendelssohn composed at the age of 20 while in love with the music of Beethoven! Brahms is heard in his most relaxed and lyrical mood, especially in the gypsy-like finale to his A minor Quartet.
