Tuesday Talks - Donal Moloney

The Tuesday Talks programme, curated by Lancaster Arts and Lancaster University's Fine Art Department, invites artists, thinkers and curators to explore an aspect of their practice in a lunch-hour.

Donal Moloney was born in Cork and lives and works in Manchester. He studied at the Crawford College of Art (BA), the Slade School of Fine Art (MFA) and University of the Arts London (PhD). He is a Senior Lecturer at Manchester School of Art.

Moloney makes intricate paintings that contain fragments of images from a wide variety of sources (drawings, sculptures, digital collages, etc). Moloney transforms images from these sources through a protracted and slow process of painting, often taking more than a year to complete each piece. In doing so, he imbues these initial ‘sketches’ with something jewel-like and precious. This ‘kaleidoscope’ of glistening surfaces becomes a vehicle for his interest in mixing fantastical imagery and ambiguous narratives.
