Volunteer Call Out: We Need Unruly Correspondents

Join artist Malaika Cunningham to kickstart a chain of conversations across Lancaster and Morecambe in the lead-up to the Festival of Dissent

The Festival of Dissent is a new one-day festival taking place at the Gregson Community & Arts Centre on Saturday 5 September. Created by Lancaster Arts in partnership with the Gregson, it celebrates curiosity, courage and imagination, inviting us to see the world through different lenses.

Malaika (she/her) is a practice-based researcher and theatre maker working across the UK and Europe. She is a co-founder of The Bare Project, a theatre and interactive arts company based in Sheffield. Her work explores the possibilities of art and performance in creating democratic spaces and environmental justice.

We're looking for 10 Unruly Correspondents to join Malaika in Pass It On, a project that will unfold across Lancaster and Morecambe in the weeks leading up to the festival. Together we will gather stories of rebellion, accounts of taking a stand, and everyday moments of dissent from across our communities to build an archive of Lancastrians everyday rebellions.

You’ll be gathering stories through a covert, chain letter campaign - sneaking small handmade packages into bike baskets, park benches and onto the doormats of lovers and enemies across the region. You’ll also be trained up in interview techniques to gather conversations with those in your life whom you have disobeyed, or rebelled alongside. These contributions will form a key part of the Festival of Dissent in September.

We're looking for people who are curious, enjoy meeting others and are interested in listening to different perspectives.

You'll need to be available for:

  • Wednesday 29 July, 6.00-7.00pm – an online introduction to the project with Malaika Cunningham and the Lancaster Arts team.

  • Thursday 20 August, 10.00am-1.30pm – a creative workshop in Lancaster, followed by a collective launch of the project across the city.

To express your interest, email hello@lancasterarts by Tuesday 28 July.

We'd love to know, in around 100 words, what interests you about the project and why you'd like to take part.

Help us start something that can't happen without you.

Pass it on.
