Chetham’s is the UK’s largest specialist music school, educating 300 of the country’s finest young musicians in the heart of Manchester. This February, its senior players bring their youthful flair and astonishing virtuosity to Lancaster, accompanied by the powerful male voices of Manchester Chamber Choir.

The evening opens with the vibrant energy of Korngold; a rare chance to hear his pastiche, in miniature, of traditional Viennese dances. This is followed by the fluid virtuosity of Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto, performed by young violinist Lia Tang and Brahms’ Alto Rhapsody, a choral and orchestral setting of Goethe’s poem, offering a prayer for the healing of its embittered protagonist. Finally Ginastera’s variations, each one reflecting the distinctive character of a different instrument, develops through ever-evolving moods the rich melodies of Argentina.
