Chinese Art

Chinese Art at the Peter Scott Gallery

Lancaster University’s collection includes examples of seventeenth century Chinese art as well as works by twentieth century Chinese artists. Works include scroll and fan paintings, ink rubbings, and prints. Among the artists represented are Zhao Shao-Ang, Ch’I Pai-Shih, Xu Beihong and Zao Wu-Ki.

These items were collected by the eminent scientist and Honorary Research Fellow at Lancaster University, Professor Irène Manton FRS. Professor Manton first began to collect art after visiting an exhibition of Chinese Art at the Royal Academy of Arts in London in 1935. As a scientist she was particularly interested in the detailed studies of nature produced by Chinese artists.
