Beneath our feet, below our city, the Mill Race still flows under Lancaster

On the 30 April 2022, join us to create a snaking, overground impression of the buried Mill Race stream, using just your voice and simple actions. The line will start at the point at which the Mill Race emerges into the Lune close to Millennium Bridge and will stretch upstream towards the Grand Theatre and beyond.

Help us uncover the Mill Race with a torrent of sound…!

This project is an uneasy tribute to the Mill Race, and you will be invited to consider this buried stream that invokes the unique history of the area, that brings with it echoes of threat, floods, and climate change. At the same time, this project opens possibilities for the future: it is a first step in revealing and engaging with the watery underbelly of the city, something that has thoroughly shaped the city, and following a dormant period, will re-shape the city this decade through the area’s regeneration.

Flow: Marking the Mill Race is part of an exciting three-year cultural programme, ‘Mill Race: Flow of Change’, which will celebrate the Mill Race area as a core and dynamic part of Lancaster that is directly informed by its heritage but also inform its emerging, contemporary character. The programme, will complement the Lancaster High Streets Heritage Action Zone being delivered by Lancaster City Council. Both programmes are managed by Historic England.

All ages and abilities are welcome to take part.
