Are you ready to dive in?
Lancaster Arts is delighted to open our season on Water with Swimming Home, Silvia Mercuriali’s unique online aural show featuring you as the swimmer!
Swimming Home brings a fully immersive theatre experience into your home, transforming your bathroom into a filmic water-world. Standing in your bathroom, wearing a swimming costume, goggles and some headphones, you are led through a journey of rediscovery of your relationship with water as you prepare to enter your bath (or shower).
As lockdown starts to ease, this is a wonderful opportunity to relax, enter an imaginative world and recall the whole experience of swimming – from getting changed to diving in the pool.
Being encouraged to stop, to listen and to observe made me realise how little I’ve switched off lately.
Following interviews with swimmers, swimming coaches and water lovers from all over the UK, Swimming Home mixes the ordinary and fictional worlds to embellish, distort and merge your perception of time & space, all from the safety of your own bathtub.
Swimming Home plays with the liminal, with the gap between imagination and reality, and urges you to let go and float away. It pays off: when you are finally allowed to submerge and dip your head under the water, it is oddly exhilarating.

Silvia Mercuriali has been working in theatre creating site-specific installations, experimental theatre shows and immersive performances. She has presented work across the UK and internationally. Silvia explores a new kind of performance whereby audience members perform the piece themselves, usually for each other (Autoteatro). Participants are given instruction via audio, visual cues or text for what to do or say. By simply following these instructions an event begins to unfold.
