Featuring appearances by writers and artists PJ Harvey, Paul Muldoon, Zen Cho, Carol Birch, Jenn Asworth, Jo Baker and many others, Lancaster Words is a three-day celebration of the written and spoken word.
Lancaster Words is led by a committee chaired by John Schad, and including Tajinder Hayer as Director, George Green as Assistant Director, and Yvonne Battle-Felton as Creative Producer.

Creating Characters for the 21st Century Young Adult Novel
In this challenge to the audience, Danielle Jawando, Pete Kalu and Tariq Mehmood will discuss how to invent characters and plots that are truly diverse. Several potential pitfalls will be outlined and the debate extended to the hot topics of authenticity, cultural appropriation, representation and artistic freedom.
By the end of the session, participants may have a better idea of how to craft YA plots which have a deep consideration of diversity and inclusion at their core.

Religion and literature: Run Away Tales: Reading the Parable of the Prodigal
Dr Mark Knight, Senior Lecturer Lancaster University’s Department of English and Creative Writing, leads a discussion on religion and literature. The event will feature four speakers: Jenn Ashworth, Karl Moller and Andrew Tate each giving 10-minute readings/interpretations of the parable of the Prodigal.

PJ Harvey and Paul Muldoon – A Conversation
PJ Harvey will join Paul Muldoon on stage at the Nuffield Theatre, Lancaster. The two will read from their poetry and explore, through conversation, its relationship to song lyrics.
